In the sheltered eastern part of the Povlja Bay, anchored the town of Povlja. The place was built in the antique period when Poval Bay was a significant anchorage of Roman ships, and it was after Romulus Paulus, who built the villa in Povlja, how the place got its name. Povlja is famous for its early Christian basilica whose remains are in the parish church of Sv. John the Baptist.
